Holiday Programs

We're all involved in holiday programs, I know! When are yours? Let us know so that we can send you happy holiday thoughts and prayers for your public performances. My first one is next Tuesday, December 5 at Horace Mann (with the evening performance at East Pike). Today for our dress rehearsal it felt like 150 degrees in the multi-purpose room...and my kids were ready to drop.

A Little Holiday Cheer

I know this is a little late, but after all these years it STILL makes me laugh. And who doesn't need a chuckle this time of year?

When Browsers Collide

I was doing research on eBay - our chorus is auctioning off the experience of conducting the Hallelujah Chorus during our big winter concert - and I had Tabishland open in another window. Suddenly I had an idea! Click on the link.

Kinda like haikus, but without all that pesky scansion

The day after Thanksgiving, I am the only one in the entire building so, out of boredom, I send a link to a group of friends on a blog we share.

Tabishland

Tabishland
Hello to all and happy thanksgiving. We just returned from France where we had a wonderful time for five weeks. Are back in Indiana and plan to travel some but will be in Indiana most of the holidays. Let us know if you are around.

PS: Keeping up with the blog really makes me wonder!!!!!!!!

Wasn't someone in Tabishland a fan of this guy? If not, why not? He's dreamy, n'est pas?

Stinging ants?

Joe, when did Tabishland become a virtual room for stinging red ants? As I'm sure you know, ants were used by early surgeons as a form of skin sutures. I suspect I could even write a prescription for sterile ants, much like I can for maggots (to debride necrotic tissue) that dear Nell would be happy to fill.

The soft porn picture of some shaman applying ant sutures to a distressed village maiden, is from an "educational book on surgical history" distributed by some drug company back in the sixties. The number of topless models in it makes me curious about how many drug company freebies back then were surreptitiously designed to appeal to prurient interests under the guise of scientific education....

There's a paper in the literature about how many hits a Dermatology site got from creeps looking for it's pictures of genitals and STDs. And for more fun, try googling "Munchausen's by proxy" and "Munchausen's by internet". It's a strange world we live in....

A Modest Proposal

Shall we try to gather next year for Ian's Shakestravaganza (see title link). And/or Meredith is also trying to get back to the National Dressage Championship in Devon PA next fall, if anyone would like to meet in Philly.

A lesser man would be frightened

Okay. Yesterday afternoon, the family was cleaning up the house. As I was putting away a bunch of CDs, I ran across AGENTS OF FORTUNE by Blue Oyster Cult and thought - "I haven't listened to this in ages" - so I pulled it out and put it in the studio. Listening to it later (this is the remastered version with bonus tracks) I noted that the only text in the liner notes for the demo of "Don't Fear The Reaper" is :The no cowbell version. A hit either way. Later in the evening I looked at Tab-land, saw the COWBELL post, watched the video and, eureaka, got the reference. And thought it a bit odd that on the day I happened to pull this disc Tim posts a video referencing it.

So this morning I got up and while waiting for the shower, checked my email. A short note from Tim asking if I was familiar with UNDERSTANDING COMICS by Scott McCloud. As it happens, I'm very familiar with it and use it as a text book in my advanced sound design class. And Scott McCloud happens to be coming to CMU in December to talk about his new book MAKING COMICS, which I'm pretty excited about.

Then I got to work and opened my email to see this message waiting for me:

From: Scott McCloud
Date: November 20, 2006 10:14:08 AM EST
To: Joseph Pino
Subject: Re: CMU visit

Hi Joe --

blah blah blah if I want him to speak to my students it can be arranged in his time at the University.

So, does anyone else think Dr. McWeinery is stalking me or something?

PS. link above for anyone who wants to know about Mr. McCloud, who is as close to brilliant as a human can get while maintaining his humility and sense of humor.

Revenge of the Telemarket-ed

This is so brilliant I'd like to buy this guy dinner.

Are We Not Old? Part II

OK...I can't believe it took me a week to realize this! You all were writing about Gomez and I was blabbering about Jimmy Buffett's new release. Guess who's on it!!!! I just heard Gomez live with JB from sunny Florida tonight. The tune is great...Take the Weather with You. I've been singing along for two weeks. I guess I'm a Gomez fan, too!

This is Lucia's group (she's to the immediate right of the camera gal). Ironically, the girl spraying Listerine up her nose plays a brainiac in their high school musical "High School Musical."

More Recipes for Thanksgiving

Here's the recipe I promised a couple of days ago. It's yummy and good for your heart, too! I think it's originally from a heart-healthy cookbook in Richard's collection.

Holiday Yams

2 large Red Delicious apples, sliced
1/3 C chopped pecans
1/3 C brown sugar
1/2 t cinnamon
1 28 oz can yams, drained
1 C miniature marshmallows (I never used these...I thought it was sweet enough)

Toss the apples with the pecans, sugar and cinnamon. Put the drained yams in a 1 1/2 qt. casserole and poke the apples between the yams. Cover and bake 35 - 45 minutes at 350 degrees. Sprinkle with marshmallows and broil 6 - 8 minutes.

It Made Me Smile

Today as I was getting out of my car at work, I noticed a single Daisy blooming at the side of the parking lot in a grassy area. It's not blooming in a protected area, quite the contrary; the area is windy and dusty and full of scrub grass and weeds. And yet that little Daisy is busily blooming in the middle of November. I wanted to pick it, but then I thought it would be better to let it grow and spread cheer to anyone else who happens to notice.

Did anything make YOU smile today? :)

I'm becoming my Dad...

I just bought an eight foot tall fiberglass ladder so I can clean out the gutters on the garage and do other odd chores around the house that are out of my reach.

Is anyone else coming down with a similar affliction?

The Perfect Thanksgiving Meal

I'm planning my Thanksgiving meal and this year, instead of making all my usual dishes I'd like to try something different. I'd like to make side dishes where the vegetables are showcased for their flavors and not masked by creams, sauces, and the like. I thought that this way the veggies would have lots of great taste without lots of heavy calories. So, if anyone would care to share any recipes or suggestions, here's your chance.

Are We Not Old?

Do we listen to anything that "the kids" listen to? (I mean aside from Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and Frank Zappa) Or are we just too damn old?

A Botanical Conundrum

With the Indian Summer we've been having in W PA this week, I've finally been cleaning up my garden. The flowers are long-dead or frozen and I've delayed the clean-up as if the delay could prolong the long-gone summer. As I was cutting back my Astilbe I noticed how many weeds had sprung up surruptitiously among the flowers. What really annoyed me was that the weeds were still green-and fluorishing! The nerve! It's November! If anyone can explain how a weed can grow, even after a killing frost, please clue me in.

There is a positive side to this. As annoying as the weed growth is, you have to give those little weeds credit for their spunk and spirit.

Holiday gifts little kids can make

I'm pork.

Why is this not a bit surprising?

Must-Have Albums

Has anyone else re-bought an album from your/our youth? I'm referring to those albums we played over and over until we wore them out or tired of them. And then one day, years later, something jars the memory and for some reason you simply have to have that album again?

I recently re-purchased Billy Joel's "The Stranger" (this time on CD) because of all the memories I associate with that album. And it's still fun to listen to.

Strip Generator Assistance

I tried to get permission to place Tabishland Comics on stuff, but it was denied-- However, if you business-types would like to help out the folks who run the Strip Generator, please read their email reply to me:

Hello Liza

Thanks for the flattering words. We love stripgen as well and since you are a fan too, we will give you a hint that new version is coming soon. I would say stay tuned for next 2 weeks. ;)

Regarding coffie mugs and characters. We do believe that you would not make a profit out of it if you say so, but unfortunately we are in general very conservative when it comes to "free" give aways of our design. But! We are thinking about selling goods like these too, with stripgenerator logos and designs on it without any profit, just to enlarge community. Right now we are looking for partners in USA and EU (covering both for that matter) so you are more than welcome to give us any directions regarding that (design ideas, ideas in general, reselling and distribution ideas and so on) or, eventually, even buy this stuff.

and of course, continue to be a stripgenerator user and please, feel free to spread the word about it!

Hello,
My friends use the Strip Generator for funny comics - we love it! Would it be ok for us to put the strips we make on mugs and shirts and such - not to sell and make money, but just for ourselves to enjoy:
