Are We Not Old?

Do we listen to anything that "the kids" listen to? (I mean aside from Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and Frank Zappa) Or are we just too damn old?

Comments:
Step-son Ed likes Gomez, but he likes Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, and Hot Hot Heat a bit more. Of course rap is tops with him, but I am not sure which artist he currently favors. He has consistently gone back to the last couple of Coheed & Cambria releases. I need to get up to speed on them as they sound kinda kool.

I try to point him to new stuff, but he likes to discover on his own. I have seen my copies of Ramones, Clash and Gang of Four CDs in his room lately, so there is hope!

If someone were to ask me if I listen to/buy new music, I would say yes, but when I think about it, I must confess I don't. I buy music and I listen to it, but it's almost all old stuff or like, the new Tom Petty CD or the new Tony Bennett compilation.

I buy stuff like Fountains of Wayne, but I don't think that qualifies. I went to an Aimee Mann show last year thinking that I was keeping up with things. The audience was mostly made up of 30 & 40 somethings. sigh.

I sometimes listen to Radiohead, but I'm under the impression that Radiohead is now old school.

The good news is that my two teenage nephews mostly listen to dinosaur rock.

hello (That's from Sean while I'm starting dinner)

Emily is into Snowpatrol and Block Party. She also likes The Fray. (Yes, she LOVES Grey's Anatomy as previously discussed but says that is pure coincidence.) Kim, Snowpatrol and The Fray have catapaulted in popularity due to their songs featured in Grey's.

Some other new music I've liked from the last coupla years:

Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Doves - Some Cities
Spoon - Gimme Fiction
Calexico - Garden Ruin
Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock And Roll
Shins - Chutes Too Narrow
Clem Snide - End of Love
STARS - Set Yourself on Fire

I heard new cuts by Mahogany and the Shins that sound exciting. I can't wait for those, plus the new one from Sloan after the first of the year.

It helps that the WVU college radio station rocks!

I haven't heard of most of these bands. Rhys is into Sublime, Metallica, Franz Ferdinand, Rob Zombie, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, The White Stripes, all sorts of things. Both kids like Queen and Billy Joel and Led Zeppelin and old stuff, too. I try to listen to things like Metallica and Sublime with an open mind. When he asks me what I think, I try to look at the pieces musically without being too critical. Sometimes you can say something like, "I don't necessarily like listening to it, but I applaud their innovation and variety" !!! And sometimes I find I like what I hear.

I have not been listening to the new stuff on my own, but I keep pop music projects in my classroom so that I can keep up with what the kids are enjoying. I love to have them analyze styles...like the stuff right now that is a cross between punk and alternative. I can't name most of the bands, but I can help the kids develop a vocabulary for describing their music...so that they can articulate exactly what it is about the music that they think is great.

I love being a music teacher...did you guess??? We've been in Egypt for two weeks...no kidding! Anyone for playing doumbek? Next week we're going to Tibet to recreate some of the cool stuff that the Buddhist monks played at IUP last week.

Kim, do Rhys a favor and introduce him to Opeth. They are far and away the best metal band around - haunting melodies, lots of instrumental chops and Mikael Akerfldt's clean vocals are on a par with Jeff Buckley (the dirty vocals are the ones that sound like the throat has been shredded by a blunt butter knife - he does those too). I drove 150 miles to see them last year on a rare US tour.

I hear a lot of new music in various projects students do for me in class - once in a great while am I interested enough to ask who it is. Last time was three years ago and it was Dan The Automator. And now I pretty much own all his stuff (except Gorillaz, who never did anything for me.)

Oh, and "Hey You Kids! Get outta my Yard!"

Heidi just bought Snow Patrol. I like 'em too. They remind me of Gin Blossoms

I'm a little late here (Hi Joe) but I listen to Coldplay and Hoobastank if they count.
