Johnstown FolkFest

There is a great little music fest over Labor Day weekend in Johnstown, PA. My wife and I attended for a day back in 2004 and had a wonderful time. The fact that I got to see amazing blues-folkie Chris Smither on a small stage in a parking lot under the stars was the best part of all. Since Labor Day is just a few weeks off, I thought I'd send an alert for those who enjoy blues, folk, zydeco and other non-mainstream forms of music. The admission is an amazingly low price - FREE! The post title is a link to the fesival site with loads of info on performers, parking, food and Johnstown.

Just across the river from the festival site is the Johnstown Flood Museum. I paid my first visit there a couple of years ago and was amazed at the presentation. It's gripping stuff, even if you did help dig out after the Johnstown flood of 1977. Be sure to catch the movie on the flood that was done in the early 1980's. I think Ian, Joe, and Chip are in the movie, but I did not recognize them. Was Mr Tabish in this? I think I saw someone who looked like him, but can't recall now. I did recognize a few IUP theatre people.

In any event, since a couple of yunz are in Indiana and a few others aren't too far away, you may want to check out the Johnstown FolkFest on Labor Day weekend.

Comments:
Ian, Chip and DRT are all in it. Dave Surtasky also, for those that know him. I'm not in it. I had to study for a final that day.

Such a conscientious student Joe.

"Zippy" Zaffuta is in it too.

He E-mann - Adrian Belew's going to be at Club Cafe 8/12 - interested in driving up? (or anyone else on the blog, though Eric seems the most likely to be interested.)

BTW Nell, so far the closest the Flaming Lips are coming to Pittsburgh is Baltimore, so keep 9/23 open.

Are you going?

Eric, I'll be in Indiana that week-end but I may not get down to Johnstown. Any chance you can get up to Indiana? I'd love to see you.

I agree with Eric about Chris Smither, who played in Bloomington, Indiana, a few years ago (and autographed my CD). He plays a variety of stuff, including a pretty mean blues for a white guy, and had the guts to close with a wrenching ballad called "Killin' the Blues" (not a blues).

Hello from the FolkFest! Your link showed up on my Web stats software, and we appreciate the plug and kind remarks about the festival and about the Johnstown Flood Museum, which like the FolkFest is run by the Johnstown Area Heritage Association. Hope to see you this Labor Day weekend.

-Shelley

Whoa! Big Brother _is_ watching...

Joe - Thanks for the Adrian Belew notice, but I'm tied up on August 12th. I saw him way back on an early tour and he ripped up the old Grafitti.

Jeff - Glad someone else here has seen Chris Smither live. He is a treasure. After seeing him in Johnstown, he came here a year ago and played a cool place geared for us older music fans.

Kim - My Labor Day weekend is already booked. I hope to get to Johnstown for part of one FolkFest day, but I am not sure. Getting back to Indiana on that weekend would not be possible. And to think I used to have NJ as a WVU recruiting territory two years ago. I've been to Ramsey, Neptune, South Plainfield, Edison, Vineland, Brick, Red Bank, Denville, Budd Lake, Fort Lee, Trenton, Cherry Hill, Marlton, Paramus, and even Olga's Diner at the circle on NJ70 just east of Cherry Hill. Yum!

Now I recruit in Ohio. Anyone in Ohio? Bueller...Bueller...Bueller

and now I have a Johnny Cash song running through my brain..."I've been everywhere..."

I went to the Johnstown Folk festival last year with our friend Arty Hill. Jason Rignenberg (of jason & the Scorchers fame) asked him to play guitar with him. We came along with Art's wife Jane. Jason got a terrible slot - like 10:30 PM or something- so we got an almost private show.

It's way cooler than most of Johnstown realizes.

Eric, sounds like you were in every town around here but the one I live in - East Brunswick. Anyway, you've moved on. Sorry I won't see you that week-end.

Gracie- I once drove from Tampa to Detroit and back to Tampa in 24 hours because I was determined to use some Richard Thompson tickets I had purchased. No anime gods in our house- but a couple of music gods -and especially Richard Thompson. Also, i listen to the World Cafe recorded at WXPN- broadcast around here at the one of the suprisingly cool college radio stations- Towson University's WTMD (and one of CSC's media partners)

Of course, we have an expert on the subject of Independent radio stations on our blog- Mr. Hansmann-

Ahhh...Richard Thompson. I saw him here in Morgantown with about 300 others in a great setting. Sheer magic, and right here where I live.

If he ever comes close to where you are, drop the coin for tickets. You will not be disappointed.

Um.. I saw Richard Thompson at the Three Rivers Arts Fest two years ago and I thought he was boring. Like, "Oh My God If I Don't Leave I'm Going To Chew Off My Own Foot!" boring. Clearly I'm missing something here. A little help?

Joe- I'll send you some Richard Thompson. You may still hate it.

Also, I found the dreamweaver cd that I swore I gave to you, but clearly didn't.

Yea!

To answer back a few posts (FLips in Balt): Nell, I'm seriously thinking about it. They encourage the audience to bring sock puppets. Seriously. From their website: These are all the confirmed upcoming dates for the extravaganza that is the Flaming Lips live. Don't miss it, and don't forget to bring yer glove puppets, furry suits, fake blood and a big smile.... I'd drive five hours for that.
