The Face of Mime
Marcel Marceau died today at the age of 84. I'll never forget seeing him perform at Heinz Hall in 1978. And I'm forever grateful Mr. Tabish that you were brave enough to plan that trip for members of Mime Club. I never would have otherwise had such a wonderful opportunity--one which I've come to appreciate more as the years go on.
Rest in Peace, M. Marceau.

Wow, I forgot all about that trip. That WAS brave.
You know...I don't think my kids would ever stop making fun of me if they knew I was in "Mime Club."
In fact, one of them just came into my office, looked over my shoulder, and said, "you were in MIME club?!"

You know, it IS the sort of thing people make fun of--perhaps because they don't understand. One of the benefits (I always thought) of learning mime, even though I pursued a more scientific career, is learning body movement and awareness. I was always a little gawky and clumsy so this helped. (It didn't eradicate it, but it helped.)
Mime means never having to say "I'm sorry".
Trivia question: What movie did MM have a speaking role in?

Nell, you've lost me....and I never pass up the easy ones. It was "Silent Movie," and it was the ONLY speaking role. I was just thinking about that.
After Marceau says "Non", Sid Caesar wants to know Marceau's answer. The response is "I don't know. I don't understand French."
I went to see him twice in Pittsburgh- once in college and once in High School. Once, I sat in the very last row of the second balcony. Anyone remember if that was this one? Peen- did you go on the IUP trip to see him?
My parents also love to tell the story of taking me and my sister Robin and my Brother Malcolm to see him in Claremont, CA in the late sixties. We all dressed up and it was a big deal, and we all fell asleep before the curtain rose.
I also remember he had interminably long curtain calls- that's so very French.
