Happy 2010, everyone. We are truly ensconced in "the future" now and I choose to view this as a possitive thing rather than a death knell. Really.

How did you spend New Years Eve? Last night was the first time in close to twenty years we did not spend it with our friends the Woods. So I made a semi-traditional New Years dinner for the fam, we had a lovely time, and then went our separate ways. Karl headed up to bed early, I tuned the harpsichord, the boys went to friends houses. Rhys, however, came home before midnight so we watched the ball drop together...well, except if you were watching the Dick Clark New Years special (probably a mistake for oh-so-many reasons), you also noticed that after talking about the damned ball for ten minutes...the dimentions, weight, etc. They didn't SHOW THE DAMNED THING DROP. I could go on.

Well, just this once, television fails to please, but other than that, a lovely and sober New Years all around for me. Today I will clean my office, read, spend time with Karl and the boys, and go to a party next door. And I will be thinking of you all. XOXO!

While I don't think the lead story is particularly fascinating - when Karl frequently traveled business class, he was more than once told to get out of the United Premier Executive line, the beard and guitar belying his Frequent Flyer status, I guess - but some of the other stories are interesting. I liked that they had to dismantle part of a plane to get at a cell phone, simply because the cell phone was ON...so they apparently aren't totally lying when they say it interferes with signals.

Each year I come back to this song as summer comes to a close. If you are a baseball fan, the season changes can mean pennant fever. BUT, if you are still a Pirate fan, it means enduring another losing season (17!) and watching young players flail in the worst stretch of games ever played in Pittsburgh. Oddly, my new hometown team of the Indians are doing the very same thing.

Hey Ian, how 'bout them Nationals? Or maybe the O's?

Of course, Stiller Nell would remind us of the new FOOTBALL season, and I am happy to see the young Penguins start up another hockey season after winning the grandest trophy of all.

And for those who do not follow sports, you may now enjoy hot soup again. You have my permission. Has anyone had a good bowl of soup in the last few days? A turkey-based batch is in my immediate future. Yum.

Today is a big day if you're a Beatles fan; I know a lot of T-land inhabitants are. I thought posting a Beatles song might be a bit obvious. Still, I feel today requires some celebration. Red velvet cupcakes come to mind. Since no one's yet perfected food transmission via the internet, I offer this gem. It combines many of my favorite things: art, science and music in a joyful way. We had a wonderful week-end. Ian is a fabulous host and director and Tab is a fab actor! The show was excellent. And the set was NOT brown.

Here we are wandering around Ellicott City. It's always just fun to hang out. The gracious and long-suffering Meredith took the picture above of the Sendracs folk; Dave took the picture of the "kids" below.

Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of Saturday afternoon when the Eric Jenkins family joined us, or the evening of the show when we were joined by Kevin, Amy, and Jim George. But they were all there! Next time hopefully more of you in Tabishland can join us. If so, I promise to bring my camera to all events.

So I was taking Ethan to a gathering at IHOP tonight, and we passed the High School. There were a few cars going in, and we wondered if there was some sort of event...but there wasn't. "Probably it's teen-agers up to something nefarious," I said. Then I was reminded of cliches like "Lover's Lanes" of the 50's. Of course in the 70's, not nearly so romantic, we just called it "parking." But what I couldn't think of was, was there a specific hot spot in Indiana? Where did everyone go? Either I just don't remember or I wasn't very popular!!!

NSFW. I thought everyone had seen this but I guess if you don't have Chinese students, it might have gone under your radar. This little bit of Disney-esque tune-age appears to be about River Crabs attacking the land of the lovely little grass-mud horse. But it's actually an anti-censorship video of diabolical cleverness. In order to fly under the oppressive Chinese censors, the video uses on the sound of words (not the spelling) to be naughty - thus the term Grass-Mud Horse sounds very much like a very naughty expletive though spelled out it is very benign ( and thus gets past the censor's scanning of the Chinese web). In fact the entire piece is a cheery but nasty ode to stds living in your mother's ..., well, you can watch the video with the translations.

All of us have been inspired by Mr. Tabish, but I, along with a few others have quite literally had the course of our lives changed by him. Even before graduation I was already participating in something that would later become my profession, classical ballet. When I told my friends that I was going to be a professional ballet dancer, I imagine they had the same quizzical look on their face as Dr. Weiner had when Tim told him that instead of following in his footsteps to medical school, he had decided to make movies. You see, Mr. Tabish had inspired all of us, each in our own way.

The thing about the stage and theatre, at any level, is that once it grabs you its almost impossible to let it go. It gets in your blood and quite literally changes you forever. Mr. Tabish
didn't teach us Science or Math, he taught us about something much more important; he taught us about life. To this day, when people ask me about who my real and true friends are, I tell them about my fellow actors in high school, I tell them about Sendracs. I mention names like Tim and Eric, and Kim, Jennie and Nell, I mention Kurt and Jeff and Ian. And when people ask me about my teachers in high school, I really can only remember one name, David Tabish.

Art has always been in my blood, I was raised in it, I didn't have a choice, nor would I have wanted one. My mother a concert pianist, my father a violinist and professor, my uncle a world famous violinist, I was destined to have some sort of artistic calling. But how was I to know that having the lead in a ninth grade musical called "Swingin High", which Mr. T. did not direct and I'm sure he's glad of that; was going to change my life forever. How was I to know that from that point forward, I would never quite be the same. And for all of us; how DO we describe the feeling of being on stage to someone who has never had the pleasure, its not just applause, its not just lights and comradarie, and lines and costumes, its something we can't quite put into words; and thats exactly what makes it so special and so rewarding!

Before there was a Dave Tabish at Indiana Area Senior High School, there was a drama director named Jim George! Ya'll remember him- father of Amy and Kevin and history teacher at IHS for a long time. Anyway, last Sunday I had the pleasure of spending the day with him. He lives in Ellicott City. We went to Tis Pity She's a Whore at Centerstage in downtown Baltimore. At 82, he was remembering Baltimore from when he lived there in the 1940's. The play wasn't so hot, but it was a real pleasure to spend time with him.

I remember hearing the stories of pre-Tabish- stories of Jim Nix (who I knew because he was a great supporter of theater in Indiana- at the high school, with the Indiana Players and at IUP) and Jim George and a fellow who was there named Lasagna- I never met him, I think he came right before Tab.

Anyone know any old pre- mid-seventies IHS drama stories?

By the way, one of Jim George's students was a guy named Fred Duer (his brother Brook was a friend- a real interesting, smart, multi-talented guy who graduated in 1978). Fred has has a great career as a designer for the theater and for television. These days he's at Indiana University (the big one in Indiana). You can find him on facebook.
